"A picture is worth a thousand words" (Arthur Brisbane, 1911)

Here in Oxfordshire, we are fortunate to have at our fingertips access to remarkable natural environment which we can observe and photograph.

The Sustainability Photographer of the Year competition is a wonderful opportunity that engages many amateur photographers every year. It comes to remind us to stop, acknowledge and value our environment, and to embrace its beauty.

So often, our work to improve environmental sustainability makes us very aware of the degradation, threat and loss around us. Going outdoors and enjoying what we have and are working to protect, helps us balance the grimness we occasionally experience.

The competition is not about finding that miraculous, once-in-a-lifetime image of nature, but rather about offering your own interpretation of day-to-day scenes. Previous winners include images of ducklings in the river alongside rowers, a dandelion in a special light, a person using research equipment in the light of dawn and a bee approaching a flower in a university garden.

Check out the winners from 2023, 2022 and 2021 for inspiration.

Who can enter?

Any current staff member or student from the University of Oxford with a valid ID card can enter. You do not need previous experience, just a camera or phone, an observant eye and some inspiration.

Judging criteria

Entries will be assessed based on the aesthetic quality of the image, its ability to bring sustainability to life, an Oxford focus on environmental issues of global significance, and adherence to the aims of the competition. Please note that once made, all judgement decisions are final and further deliberation will not take place.

Announcing the winners

The Sustainability Photographer of the Year and the four finalists will be contacted via email by the end of May 2023. The public announcement will take place at the End of the year showcase on the first week of July.
