Taking staycation inspiration from your favourite novels

Why not plan a ‘staycation’ inspired by Enid Blyton, Jerome K. Jerome and Arthur Ransome?

Enid Blyton’s Famous Five

Mention of Enid Blyton’s stories of “Five on Treasure Island” can elicit a sense of nostalgia and excitement, which could easily be replicated. Exploring the walls of Corfe Castle in Dorset, the inspiration behind Kirrin Island, is a must. Also, the sea caves in Porthgwarra, Cornwall pay homage to the book’s smugglers top. Here, you can explore the sea caves, go rock pooling or take a tour of the famous lighthouse. You could even visit treasure island itself by taking a ferry to Looe Island of the south coast which is now a nature sanctuary and the perfect location for an adventure. Jerome K. Jerome’s brilliant account of a holiday down the River Thames to Oxford is the perfect inspiration for a British holiday. In a truly sustainable manner, hire a traditional rowing boat and follow his famous route downriver, camping along the way (you could even bring your dog). An additional alternative is to walk sections (or all) of the Thames Pass Path following sites that are mentioned in the book such as the path from Marlow to Sonning, Hampton Court Maze, or other exciting and funny adventures inspired by the book.

Arthur Ransome’s book perfectly depicts a British holiday, filled with sailing, fishing and swimming. The Lake District, specifically Lake Coniston would be a good place to start, but your nearest beach or lake will do. Paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking are among the fantastic, low carbon activities that can be enjoyed without worrying about the environmental impact. Plenty of information about these activities can be found on the British Canoeing website. You could also learn to sail in the Norfolk Broads or explore the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, which replicates subtropical adventure without the unnecessary air travel.
